Emily Pennington cut her teeth in Los Angeles, training professionally in both musical theater and circus before shifting gears to become both a journalist and a musician. Her influences influences are broad and deep, drawing inspiration from classic songwriters like Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch, and Lucinda Williams, as well as more contemporary acts like Big Thief, Mitski, The Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Mountain Goats, and PJ Harvey. She also performs in the duo act Trouble’s Braids, playing a vibrant mix of classic Americana folk songs, grungy acoustic covers, and heartfelt originals.
